Singapore's Changi Airport has been named the world's best airport multiple times for good reason. It's efficient, clean, and surprisingly enjoyable. But if you're arriving for the first time, knowing what to expect can help you move through the airport quickly and start your Singapore experience on the right foot. This first time singapore airport guide covers everything from pre-arrival preparation through immigration, baggage, terminal details, transport options, and practical tips — plus a section on departing Singapore when your trip ends.
SG Arrival Card. Since 2024, Singapore requires all visitors to submit an electronic SG Arrival Card up to 3 days before arrival. This replaces the old paper disembarkation card. Complete it at the ICA website or app — it takes about 5 minutes and saves significant time at immigration.
Visa requirements. Citizens of many countries (including the US, UK, EU, Australia, Japan, and South Korea) receive visa-free entry for 30-90 days. Check the ICA website for your specific nationality. Chinese passport holders should check current visa arrangements, as Singapore has been expanding visa-free access in recent years.
Currency. Singapore uses the Singapore Dollar (SGD). ATMs are available throughout the airport, and credit cards are widely accepted everywhere in Singapore. There's no need to exchange currency before arriving — you'll get better rates at the airport or in the city.
Changi has four operating terminals, with a fifth under construction. Each terminal has a distinct character and serves different airlines. Here is your changi airport terminal guide:
Terminal 1 (T1). Many full-service Asian carriers including Singapore Airlines (selected flights), Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, and Qantas (selected flights). T1 is directly connected to Jewel Changi Airport, making it easy to explore Jewel's shops, restaurants, and the famous Rain Vortex waterfall immediately after landing. Immigration processing at T1 is typically efficient, with both automated and manned lanes.
Terminal 2 (T2). Singapore Airlines (most flights), Scoot (Singapore Airlines' low-cost carrier), and various regional carriers. T2 underwent a major renovation and expansion completed in recent years, with modernised immigration halls, expanded retail, and improved passenger flow. It is the most commonly used terminal for Singapore Airlines passengers.
Terminal 3 (T3). Singapore Airlines (A380 flights), Emirates, British Airways, Lufthansa, and other major long-haul carriers. T3 handles many of the intercontinental flights and tends to be the busiest terminal for international arrivals during early morning hours (5-8am), when overnight flights from Europe and the Middle East land.
Terminal 4 (T4). Budget and regional carriers including AirAsia, Cebu Pacific, Korean Air, and Cathay Pacific (selected flights). T4 operates with a high degree of automation — many passengers experience automated check-in, automated bag drop, and automated immigration gates throughout their journey. T4 is located separately from Terminals 1-3 and is connected by a free shuttle bus rather than the Skytrain. Allow an extra 5-10 minutes if you need to transit between T4 and the other terminals.
Terminal 5 (T5). Currently under construction, Terminal 5 is projected to be one of the world's largest airport terminals when completed. It will significantly expand Changi's capacity and is designed to handle next-generation wide-body aircraft. Check for updates closer to your travel date, as T5 may begin phased operations in the coming years.
Your airline and flight number determine which terminal you arrive at. Always check before you fly — it matters for arranging pickups and knowing what facilities are available.
Immigration at Changi is typically fast by international standards. Automated lanes are available for citizens of many countries — look for the "Automated Immigration" signs if you hold a passport from an eligible nation. Manual counter processing usually takes 5-15 minutes depending on queue length. Peak times for immigration queues are early morning (5-8am, when overnight flights from Europe land) and late evening (10pm-midnight, when flights from East Asia arrive in clusters).

T4 features particularly advanced automated immigration gates that use facial recognition technology, often allowing passengers to clear immigration without any human interaction.
After immigration, follow signs to the baggage claim area. Changi's baggage handling is among the fastest in the world — bags typically start appearing on the carousel within 10-15 minutes of landing.
Customs is "green channel" (nothing to declare) for most travellers. Singapore has strict rules on bringing in: more than 1 litre of spirits, tobacco products (all quantities require duty payment — there is no duty-free tobacco allowance for arrivals), chewing gum (prohibited), and controlled substances (severe penalties). When in doubt, use the red channel and declare.
Once you clear customs, you'll enter the public arrivals hall. This is where:
If you've booked a chauffeur service like REI Rental, your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall of your specific terminal with a name board showing your name. They'll assist with luggage and walk you to the vehicle — typically parked in the nearby short-term car park, a 2-3 minute walk. Our airport arrival service (/services/airport-arrival) includes flight tracking, so if your flight is delayed, your driver adjusts automatically.
The fastest and most comfortable option for first-time visitors is a pre-booked chauffeur transfer. Your driver handles navigation, toll roads (ERP), and parking while you relax and take in Singapore's skyline on the drive to your hotel.
These times assume normal traffic conditions. During peak hours (7:30-9:30am, 5:30-8pm), add 15-20 minutes. Late night and early morning transfers (10pm-6am) are typically the fastest.
Once you've settled into your hotel, you'll likely need transport for sightseeing, business meetings, and dining. REI Rental offers point-to-point transfers (/services/transfer) for single journeys between any two locations in Singapore — not just airport trips. If you have a full day of activities, our hourly disposal service (/services/disposal) provides a dedicated chauffeur and vehicle for a block of hours. Visit our services page to see all available options.
If Singapore is a transit stop rather than your final destination, you can still make the most of your time. Transit passengers with a layover of 5 hours or more can leave the airport and explore the city — provided you meet Singapore's visa requirements.
Jewel Changi Airport is the easiest option for shorter layovers (2-4 hours). Connected directly to Terminal 1 and accessible from all other terminals, Jewel offers over 280 shops and restaurants, the spectacular Rain Vortex waterfall, a canopy park with walking trails, and even a hotel if you need rest.
For longer layovers (6+ hours), consider booking a short city tour. A 4-hour disposal service lets you see Gardens by the Bay, the Merlion, and Chinatown before returning to the airport for your onward flight. REI Rental can pick you up from your arrival terminal and return you to your departure terminal with plenty of time to clear security.
Every trip ends with a departure, and Changi Airport makes leaving Singapore nearly as pleasant as arriving. Here is what you need to know about departing.
Which terminal? Your departure terminal depends on your airline and destination. Check your booking confirmation or the airline's website. Importantly, your departure terminal may be different from your arrival terminal — always verify before heading to the airport.
When to arrive. For international flights, aim to arrive at Changi Airport 2.5-3 hours before your scheduled departure. This allows time for check-in, baggage drop, immigration clearance, and security screening. During peak periods (particularly early morning departures to Australia and evening departures to Europe), queues can be longer than usual.
Check-in options. Most airlines at Changi offer online check-in 24-48 hours before departure. T4 has fully automated self-service check-in and bag drop kiosks. At T1-T3, a mix of counter check-in and self-service options are available.
Departure lounge tips. Changi's departure transit areas are famously well-equipped. Each terminal offers extensive duty-free shopping, restaurants, lounges, and amenities. Notable features include free movie theatres (T2 and T3), a rooftop swimming pool (T1), a butterfly garden (T3), and gaming zones. If you have a long wait before boarding, these amenities make the time pass quickly.
Airport departure transfer. REI Rental's airport departure service (/services/airport-departure) takes the stress out of your final journey. Your driver picks you up at your hotel or any location in Singapore, helps with luggage, and delivers you to the correct terminal entrance. We calculate pickup times based on your flight schedule and factor in traffic conditions, ensuring you arrive with ample time but don't waste hours waiting at the airport unnecessarily.
Tipping customs. Tipping is not expected or customary in Singapore. Restaurants often include a 10% service charge automatically. Taxi drivers and chauffeurs do not expect tips, though they are appreciated for exceptional service.
Power outlets. Singapore uses the Type G power outlet (the three-rectangular-pin British-style plug). If your devices use a different plug type, pick up an adapter at any convenience store in the airport arrivals hall or at your hotel.
Weather preparation. Singapore is equatorial, meaning it is hot and humid year-round. Daytime temperatures typically range from 30-33 degrees Celsius (86-91 Fahrenheit) with high humidity. Rain is common and often arrives as sudden, heavy afternoon showers lasting 30-60 minutes. Carry a compact umbrella and wear light, breathable clothing. Air conditioning in malls, hotels, and vehicles is strong — a light jacket can be useful indoors.
Peak arrival times to avoid. If you have flexibility in booking flights, be aware that Changi Airport's busiest arrival periods are early morning (5-8am, overnight flights from Europe), late morning (10am-noon, flights from East Asia and Southeast Asia), and late evening (10pm-midnight, regional evening flights). Off-peak arrivals (early afternoon, mid-evening) typically mean shorter immigration queues and faster baggage delivery.
Water safety. Singapore's tap water is safe to drink. There is no need to buy bottled water for general consumption.
Language. English is one of Singapore's four official languages and is widely spoken. Signage, menus, and transport information are primarily in English. Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil are also official languages. You will have no difficulty communicating in English throughout your stay.
Mobile connectivity. Singapore has excellent 4G and 5G mobile coverage across the entire island. Free Wi-Fi is available at Changi Airport (connect to "Changi WiFi") and at most shopping malls, cafes, and hotels.
